MISTI Global Teaching Labs in Wales

Powered & delivered by Equal Education Partners

Funded by the Welsh Government

Our Mission

When? January 2025

Where? In schools & colleges across Wales

The MISTI Global Teaching Labs in Wales programme is a uniquely impactful and transformative programme, bringing expert STEM instructors from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to classrooms and staff rooms across Wales.

Through this partnership initiative, the Welsh Government, MIT and Equal Education Partners aim to enhance engagement with STEM subjects through exploring real-world issues and to empower learners to strive to achieve their full potential in and beyond the classroom.

What’s available?

STEM workshops

Our instructors from MIT and other top global universities offer an extensive variety of lessons and workshops across all areas of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM), providing something exciting and impactful for pupils of all age groups and attainment levels. Our workshops strive to engage all learners. See the MISTI GTL Wales Curriculum document for more details.

Bespoke interdisciplinary projects

Get creative! Schools and colleges can work directly with one or more instructors to co-create bespoke projects, bringing together different areas of STEM for your pupils. Past projects include The Rovi Porter Robotics Challenge, Powering a Sustainable Island, Building Earthquake-Proof Buildings, The Pompeii Project and Rollercoaster Quadratics. Bring your ideas and let’s see what we can develop!

Small group and 1-to-1 tutoring

More than ever, learners are in need of individual or small group support, particularly in key areas such as Science & Mathematics. Our instructors are available to help your pupils catch up and support your institution’s recovery efforts. Identify pupils in need of support, identify areas you want our instructors to cover and we’ll ensure they get the boost they need.

Information, Advice & Guidance (IAG) sessions and Masterclasses

The MISTI Global Teaching Labs in Wales programme goes beyond the academic aspects of your students’ success. Our instructors serve as a resource and as role models to your students to widen their horizons and enhance their aspirations. IAG sessions, panel events and masterclasses include topics including Women in STEM, Women in Tech, Sports & STEM, Studying STEM subjects at university and Careers in STEM.

Professional Learning & Curriculum Development

Through the MISTI GTL in Wales programme, STEM teachers and school & college leaders can work with MIT instructors to enhance their STEM curriculum. The programme also includes a STEM Professional Learning Programme for teachers in Wales delivered by experts from MIT’s Scheller Teacher Education Program (STEP).

For open events, see our Events page for details. Events will be added on a rolling basis. Get involved to hear more when events are added.

University exploration & application support

Applicants to STEM degrees are often required to complete additional tests and assessments. The MISTI Global Teaching Labs in Wales programme supports those seeking to study STEM subjects at university. Let us know if you have pupils keen to apply to STEM courses at university. Our instructors will support them to succeed in this competitive environment.

Watch the video below to hear what our participating instructors, schools & colleges and learners had to say about the January 2023 in-person MISTI GTL in Wales programme.

Our learners were so engaged with our instructor over the month and we still have pupils asking questions about MIT now. I've noticed a big improvement in pupils attitudes towards the subject since our instructor left. I hope this will continue through the year and we can build on this again if we're lucky enough to have another instructor next year.”

— Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni

"All pupils were enthused by the activities, and were excited to work with their instructor. The way in which the project was setup allowed them to showcase their research and become far more independent in their learning."

— Ysgol Bro Dinefwr

The pupils immediately took our instructor who delivered the lessons which he made from scratch with professionalism and enthusiasm. Our students really benefited from his expertise and guidance into programming and these lessons have not been adopted into our STEM curriculum. Equal made sure the students had fun activities to do on weekends”

— Pentrehafod School

"Role-modelling of females in STEM areas is very powerful and the GTL project allowed us to develop this capacity in an authentic manner."

— Caerleon Comprehensive School

"GTL in Wales was one of the greatest experiences of my time at MIT and of my life so far. Getting to see learners light up while learning a new STEM topic was incredibly rewarding. I will miss the students, my host family, and my time in Wales a lot, and will carry this experience with me forever."
